Film never disappears from my life, but for reasons too heavy and depressing to get into, it's been a bit player for a while. Between graphic design and photography gigs, I sometimes jot down script notes. I still watch films with the sound off, picking apart coverage and editing choices, mentally prepping for my next directing gig. But filmmaking has otherwise been the furthest thing from my mind.
That's why I'm so thrilled about the one project I have found time for, the short dramedy Afghan, written and directed by friend, comedian, countryman Pardis Parker. Afghan will screen Tuesday as part of the CBC Atlantic Shorts Gala at the Atlantic Film Festival.

Pardis Parker in Afghan
The film, which I cut in my home edit suite, is a bittersweet story about intolerance and friendship, shot on a mix of 16mm film, high-def video (courtesy of a Sony XDCAM-EX1), and MiniDV. Needless to say, technical challenges arose on a daily basis during post, but I'm very pleased with the finished product.
